Junior Band
The Junior Band (previously called the ‘Training Band’) is an introductory band predominantly for students in their first year of playing an instrument. This band is usually mostly made up of Year 3 students, but it is open to students from Years 3 to 6 who have no or minimal prior experience. Students will remain in this ensemble until they have finished their Bronze Award.

String Ensemble
This ensemble looks after all traditional bowed string instruments (violin, viola, cello, and double bass). Students need to start private lessons and be able to play one octave on their instrument before starting in the ensemble.

Performance Band
This is an extension ensemble (previously known as the ‘Jazz Band’). Students must also be in the Concert Band (which is their core band) to be in the Performance Band. Performance Band members are still expected to participate in all Concert Band rehearsals as section leaders, where they will continue developing the fundamentals of ensemble playing. Entry is by audition and there are firm expectations surrounding the practice time band members put in (during term time).
