Making music together
The Normanhurst West band community believes that music is a fundamental part of society, and that learning music helps develop a child by fostering creativity, instilling discipline, building confidence, and teaching patience.
Our music program focuses not only on the development of these skills, but also on ensuring that students learn music, the ‘universal language’, in a fun, challenging, and inclusive environment.
A workout for the brain
Research has shown that learning to play an instrument is of great benefit to a child’s developing brain As Anita Collins explains in this video, ‘When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout.’
What instruments are in a concert band?
Local music company Teaching Services Australia has made a great school band demonstration video that introduces different instruments. You may like to watch the video with your child to find out more about band instruments and being in a school band. Note that the video is from a different school, so don’t follow the instructions in their video and join their band!.
Another look at instruments
The NSW Police Band have a great website which introduces the instruments of the band too. Check it out here: NSW Police Welcome to the Band
